Student Success Stories

Christine is a 23 year old, unemployed, single mother to a 3 year old child. Having dropped out of high school while in the 11th grade, she knew she needed to obtain her GED in order to attend college and pursue her goal to become a children psychologist. She enrolled in the St. Vincent & Sarah Fisher Center’s GED Tutoring program in March 2009.

It took Christine about a year to complete the program. During that year, she struggled with obstacles that she had to overcome, such as domestic abuse, lack of income and temporary housing issues. With support and encouragement from our staff, Christine successfully passed the GED with exceptionally high scores. And in March, 2010 - Christine was awarded the GED Certificate. The overall results of the high test scores placed Christine with a 3.5 G.P.A. and an offer towards a scholarship to attend classes at Marygrove College.

Not only did Christine remove herself from bad circumstances and accomplish the first of her goals. She made a better life for herself and her child and taught by example that education can lead to a better life. And that The Education Experience is here to help.

March 28, 2011 - A new student of our children's after-school program was working with his tutor.  His mother came to the Center to observe our process and to see how her son was adapting to the program.  Standing in the doorway of the room, the Children's Program Director and the mother were speaking about the young 1st grader.  He recognized his mother's voice.  He looked up and grinning from ear-to-ear, held up his book and shouted to her "Momma!  I'm reading!"

That is why we are here.
